Thanksgiving is one of our favorite holidays. Melding the desires of a vegetarian and the son of a beef farmer makes for very interesting food traditions. Fortunately, my husband is open-minded and he loves culinary challenges (did I mention that he is an amateur chef?). So, we have had a few years when he gamely devised full (and delicious to everyone) vegetarian Thanksgiving dinners. Over more than a dozen Thanksgivings together though, we have moved past most experimentation and settled on a few key dishes as our family tradition. For example, every year we have lentil loaf as a primary dish. We also have a yummy stuffed squash that serves as a beautiful centerpiece food and a vehicle for stuffing. Most years, we also have a main meat dish. All our side dishes are vegetarian.
This year, our son is old enough to remember what food we have. So, I broached the subject of possibly having a turkey—obviously not for me, but for our son and guests. Here is how the surprisingly short conversation went:
Me: Hey, I was thinking that maybe you would like to have a turkey this year. After all, it is Thanksgiving and I think B— would love it.
Geoff: Babe, I was raised on a beef farm. I’m not serving poultry on Thanksgiving. We’re having pot roast.
Okay. Pot roast it is.
