faith, mothering, and engaging the sacred world

About

My name is Austen. I am a mother, wife, writer, editor, associate pastor, Christian, ecofeminist, and global citizen. I have a Masters degree in religion & society, and more than four years of training in unexpectedness, joy, and wistfulness as a mother. My 4-year-old son is my pupil, my guide, and a bundle of curious energy. My husband, Geoff, is my best friend, partner, and super love.

I believe that life is intertwined. It matters how I act toward the planet, toward other people and creatures, and in response to God. Indeed, God’s presence is found in relationships. For me, conscious living (living with presence & awareness), mothering, and creative acts are acts of faith. I believe Gandhi’s adage that you have to be the change you want to see in the world; I consider it a pithy summary of faith, where my journey centers.

“Basil & Butterflies” is a blog about living in a sacred world, where every action matters and we have the potential to make the world a better place. To me, engaging the sacred world means living with wonder and awareness, appreciating creativity, finding natural rhythms, seeking answers, and discerning questions. Theology, politics, environmental concerns, social justice issues, being outside, natural parenting, creativity, and humor are all part of being fully present where we live.

People from all faiths and various experiences are welcome. Every interaction offers the potential for wisdom. So, please comment, share, teach, and learn. But please do so respectfully, with a kind heart and gentle words.
