Christina, a Master Gardener and the owner of Basil & Butterflies, worked as an English teacher in Spain, Turkey, the Czech Republic, South Korea, and South Florida for 17 years. She spent a dozen of those years gardening in the subtropics, tending mangoes, guanabana, passionfruit, and papayas in her backyard, while hosting a butterfly colony of zebra longwings and endangered atalas. Her travels abroad in the developing world, plus the years of teaching at a Title I school with 99% of students on free lunch, have shown her how food insecurity is still so prevalent, even in the US.

One of her goals as a gardener is to teach others that anyone can grow their own food, even in small spaces and with minimal expertise. Gardening can not only feed families, but also, choosing to plant natives alongside a kitchen garden can help to heal the natural world.
